Kurt Weill was born on 2 March 1900, the son of the cantor of the Jewish community in Dessau. The Kurt Weill Centre in Dessau was founded in 1993 and is at present the only European centre documenting the life and works of the composer. The Kurt Weill Centre has its headquarters in Feininger's House which has been authentically restored. It is one of the houses on the Masters' Houses Estate.

There is an exhibition about the life of the composer in this building. To celebrate his birthday the Kurt Weill Society organises an annual Kurt Weill Festival in the first week of March. The aim of this festival is to draw attention to and to publicise the extent of his complete works.
